Over 200 towns and cities in Philippines declare state of calamity due to cyclones Kristine and Leon
A state of calamity has been declared in 207 towns and 29 cities across 14 provinces due to tropical cyclones Kristine and Leon. This allows local governments to access emergency funds and implement price controls on essential goods. The Energy Regulatory Commission has ordered utilities to avoid disconnecting electricity for customers using 200 kilowatt hours or less. Flexible payment options for electricity bills will also be available for the next three months. As of Thursday night, Typhoon Leon was moving northwest and was expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility soon. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported 150 deaths and significant damage to homes and infrastructure.
