Over 10,000 jobseekers in Ireland lose benefits
Over 10,000 jobseekers have lost their benefits after not engaging with the Government's Intreo employment services. This is a significant increase, with the number of cuts doubling since 2023. Aidan Farrelly, a member of the Social Democrats and a representative for Kildare North, commented on the situation. He believes that reducing benefits should be a last resort. Farrelly understands that some individuals may not show interest in finding work, which can warrant a review of their payments. However, he emphasizes that support should be the priority. Farrelly argues that Intreo offices and employment workers should first ensure people have the necessary education and support to find suitable jobs. Official data from the Department of Social Protection reveals that areas like Waterford, Limerick, Wexford, Laois, and Louth have higher rates of benefit cuts.
