Ovechkin targets Gretzky's all-time goals record
Wayne Gretzky's records in hockey have long been considered unbreakable, but some might still fall. Alex Ovechkin's pursuit of Gretzky's all-time goals record has highlighted other records that players may someday surpass. One record in jeopardy is Gretzky's 19 point-per-game seasons. Sidney Crosby, who currently has 19, needs just two more points to set a new record. He has consistently scored at least a point per game throughout his career, and with ten games left this season, he is close to achieving this milestone. Ovechkin is also nearing Gretzky's combined goals record of 1,016, having scored 960 goals so far. If he breaks the regular-season record soon, he will only need 50 more combined goals to set a new benchmark. However, as Ovechkin approaches his 40th birthday, time is running out for him to break this record. Another record is for the most 50-goal seasons, where Gretzky, Mike Bossy, and Ovechkin share the record with nine. Leon Draisaitl has three 50-goal seasons and is working on a fourth. However, catching up to the leaders will be a challenge for him. The most 60-goal seasons record is held by Gretzky with five, while Auston Matthews has two. Matthews has faced injury difficulties but his scoring ability puts him in a good position to challenge this record in the future. As for the most 100-point seasons, Gretzky has 15, with Connor McDavid currently at seven. McDavid's average points per game is impressive, but injuries could hinder his ability to reach this milestone within the necessary timeframe. Lastly, Gretzky's record for the most consecutive 100-point seasons stands at 13. McDavid is at four but was close to breaking that record before the pandemic disrupted the season in 2020.
