OSU student raises awareness on bird safety from window strikes
Birds often collide with windows, mistaking reflections for open space. An Oregon State University student, Jayshaun Talbert, witnessed a hawk suffer a fatal injury from such a strike, highlighting the issue's severity. Over 1 billion birds die annually in the U.S. from window strikes, with many occurring at homes. Talbert presented research on this problem and suggested measures to prevent collisions, such as using window markers and reducing artificial light. Experts recommend placing bird feeders far from buildings and using window screens to improve visibility. Cities like Portland have adopted programs to dim lights during migration seasons to protect birds from disorientation and collisions.
