Orillia ice storm keeps cemetery closed for cleanup
Saint Andrew’s - Saint James’ Cemetery in Orillia, Ontario, remains closed a month after an ice storm caused significant damage, delaying public access. The 35-acre cemetery is undergoing extensive cleanup, including removing downed trees and repairing approximately 30 toppled headstones, with damage estimated at $35,000. Crews are prioritizing headstone restoration and removing hazardous branches. Established in 1873, the cemetery holds over 35,000 interments and is home to many trees over 150 years old. Officials hope to reopen the site to visitors in early May.
