NYSUT advocates for cellphone ban in New York schools
The president of the New York State United Teachers, Melinda Person, is advocating for a strict cellphone ban in schools. This proposal would prohibit students from using their phones from the start to the end of the school day. However, not everyone agrees with this idea. Some lawmakers and school leaders have expressed concerns. Last week, both the New York Superintendents’ Association and the School Boards Association voiced their support for allowing local districts to set their own rules regarding cellphone use. They favor a proposal that would give schools more flexibility in determining when phones can be used. Additionally, state Assembly Education Chair Michael Benedetto has suggested a plan that would require districts to create cellphone policies based on their unique needs. Despite these differing opinions, teachers' unions remain firmly in favor of the statewide ban and are calling for its implementation.
