New York City health officials confirmed Wednesday the first human case of West Nile virus in the city this year, according to a report. The unidentified resident became ill after spending time outdoors in the city and other locations. The diagnosis comes as 222 human cases have been reported nationally, mostly in Arizona, California, and Texas. Mosquitoes carrying the virus have been detected in all five boroughs since June, within nearly twice as many samples as last summer. Health Commissioner Alister Martin emphasized prevention, urging New Yorkers to use insect repellent, cover up at dawn and dusk, and remove standing water. The virus is mosquito-borne and can cause severe illness.
