NYC expands free swimming classes to 18,000 children
New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced a $5.5 million increase for free swimming classes aimed at students. The goal is to improve swim safety as summer approaches. Adams stated that the expansion is part of a plan to make the city a better place for families. The funding will allow nearly 18,000 students to participate in the swimming program. This is an increase from 14,000 participants in 2024. The program also includes year-round swim safety classes held in the fall, winter, and spring, with six classes each for groups of 20 students. Deputy Mayor Jeffrey Roth highlighted the importance of swim safety. He noted that, as city summers get hotter, many people turn to public pools and beaches to cool off. The city is investing over $1 billion to improve pool facilities, but swim safety skills are essential for all users. Approximately 20,000 New Yorkers of all ages participate in the Parks Department's swimming series every year. On Staten Island, residents have access to seven public pools for recreation.
