A 27-year-old man from Newark, Ibn R. Johnson, was arrested on Saturday after a police chase that started with a crash into a patrol car. Police Chief Scott Tamagny announced the charges against him on Tuesday, which include aggravated assault and eluding police. The incident began when Sgt. Ray Forsdahl noticed Johnson’s car lacked a front license plate and had tinted windows. While conducting traffic enforcement at Fort Lee Road, Forsdahl signaled for Johnson to stop as he turned into Leonia High School's driveway. Instead of pulling over, Johnson attempted to drive around the patrol car but hit it on the passenger side and fled the scene. Forsdahl then pursued Johnson, calling for backup from other police departments. Johnson continued driving south on Willow Tree Road before crashing into a curb and a street sign. He exited the car and ran away, while Forsdahl continued to chase him. Officer Nolan Stendor remained with Johnson's female passenger, who did not face any charges. Patrolman Tim Dinnell eventually caught Johnson in the backyard of a property on Schor Avenue. He, along with Palisades Park Police Officer James Park, took Johnson into custody. In addition to the charges against him, Johnson is facing multiple motor vehicle offenses. He was taken to Bergen County Jail and is awaiting a court hearing.
