Urologists at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad have performed the institute's first robotic kidney transplant. The surgery was done on a 33-year-old man from Nalgonda who has been suffering from end-stage renal disease for nearly ten years. The patient had previously received a kidney transplant in 2017 but faced rejection, leading to the need for a second transplant. This time, he received a cadaver kidney, making the procedure more complicated. However, the surgery was successful, and the new kidney started functioning immediately, which is a good sign for recovery. The transplant would normally cost around ₹20 lakh at private hospitals. However, it was done at NIMS for free under the Rajiv Aarogyasri scheme. Dr. Rahul Devraj, head of Urology at NIMS, emphasized the benefits of robotic surgery, such as precision, smaller incisions, and quicker recovery. In the year 2025, NIMS has already performed 41 kidney transplants, bringing its total to nearly 2,000. The urology department also performs about 11,000 other surgeries every year. Dr. N. Bheerappa, the director of NIMS, praised the urology team for their achievement and commitment to advancing healthcare.
