New Zealand Rugby rejects proposed Anzac Day test match

New Zealand Rugby has rejected the idea of holding an Anzac Day rugby test between the Wallabies and All Blacks. The proposal was made by Rugby Australia for a third Bledisloe Cup match to be played on April 25, starting in 2026. This match would take place during the Super Rugby Pacific season. Mark Robinson, the chief executive of New Zealand Rugby, said there were too many issues to resolve. He mentioned that while they were open to exploring the idea, discussions with players, clubs, and partners showed that it was not feasible. Robinson pointed out concerns about scheduling and the financial model proposed by Rugby Australia. Robinson also highlighted that if the event was to happen, they would prefer a home-and-away format. Playing away every year was not considered appropriate. The financial implications of such a match were also a key concern, especially regarding impacts on Super Rugby and player welfare. Despite predictions that an Anzac Day Bledisloe Cup in Perth could be financially profitable, NZR remains unsupportive. Robinson noted that based on the information available, there are currently no solutions that could make the concept work. He finds it hard to see a change in their stance anytime soon.
