New York supports ban on school cell phones
New York lawmakers are showing support for Governor Kathy Hochul’s plan to ban cell phones in schools throughout the entire school day. The proposal, called a "bell-to-bell" policy, restricts phone use from the start of the school day until dismissal. The plan includes a budget of $13.5 million and aims to eliminate distractions for students. Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins noted that most legislators are becoming comfortable with this approach, which will be implemented in the next school year. Opposition exists from some school officials and parents, who have concerns about potential funding needs and staying connected with their children. Despite these worries, proponents argue that the ban is essential for effective education and reducing distractions in classrooms. Mayor Eric Adams supports the plan but advocates for more funding to make it work. Hochul has framed this ban as an extension of last year's legislation regulating social media for minors. The final budget is expected by April 1.
