New rules for passenger vehicles to enhance safety
The state transport department is set to create new rules for passenger vehicles. This decision follows a directive from transport minister Pratap Sarnaik regarding the misuse of mobile phones and electronic devices by drivers. A committee of experts will assist in developing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for government, semi-government, and private passenger vehicles. The committee will be led by state transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar. Their goal is to establish safer practices for drivers and reduce distractions that could endanger passengers. Minister Sarnaik expressed concern about the dangers posed by drivers using mobile phones or electronic devices while on the road. He emphasized that this behavior can significantly risk the lives of all passengers. Citizens are also voicing their concerns. Kiran Pisal, a regular passenger, noted that distracted drivers endanger everyone. Amit Dengale added that driving should be a focused task, not an opportunity to engage in personal entertainment like games or movies. The need for these new rules became clearer after a photo emerged of a bus driver watching a cricket match while driving. This incident led to action against the driver but highlighted a broader issue affecting private vehicle drivers as well. With the rise of mobile phone usage, complaints about irresponsible driving behavior have surged, prompting this urgent response from the transport department.
