New Mexico lawmakers ask Apple and Google to keep state's name on maps

New Mexico’s congressional delegation has asked Apple and Google to publicly commit to keeping the state’s name on their mapping services, following President Donald Trump’s social media posts suggesting it be renamed “New America.” The lawmakers emphasized the president lacks legal authority to change the name. The five Democratic lawmakers sent letters Thursday to the tech companies, citing New Mexico’s constitution, which states the name is “New Mexico.” They noted Trump posted at least seven maps over the weekend and has previously issued executive orders renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario, which both companies have implemented. The delegation called the companies’ past map updates “disappointing but unsurprising,” citing their business interests with the federal government. They requested commitments regardless of presidential pressure, while noting Trump cannot compel private entities to follow his directives.
