The name New Mexico has existed for over 450 years, originating from Spanish explorers in the 1560s. Trump previously renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America and the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, citing "American Greatness." Residents, including Indigenous and Hispanic communities, condemned the move as racist and frightening. New Mexico has the highest proportion of Hispanic and Latino residents of any U.S. state at around 49%. Critics questioned why Trump targeted New Mexico instead of states like New York or New Jersey. The White House did not respond to requests for comment.
