Navajo Code Talker John Kinsel Sr. dies at 107, leaving legacy of service
John Kinsel Sr., one of the last Navajo Code Talkers, has died at the age of 107. He played a vital role in World War II by sending coded messages in the Navajo language, helping secure an Allied victory. Kinsel's passing has prompted tributes from family and officials, including Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren, who ordered flags to be lowered in his honor. Kinsel served in the Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945, participating in key battles in the Pacific. With Kinsel's death, only two Navajo Code Talkers remain. He was recognized for his service with a Purple Heart and a Congressional Silver Medal, and he dedicated his life to advocating for Indigenous rights.
