Nations seek Starlink alternatives due to geopolitical shifts, especially Europe
Geopolitical events are driving nations to seek alternatives to SpaceX's Starlink satellite network. This increased demand fuels growth for sovereign satellite systems, particularly in Europe, where reliance on U.S. infrastructure is now being reassessed. Europe is responding with initiatives like the IRIS² multi-orbit broadband constellation, aimed at reducing reliance on foreign systems. This project will deploy over 290 satellites by 2031, with a total cost exceeding $11 billion. Competition is intensifying, as Starlink also expands its direct-to-device services, and faces challenges from established players. Several U.S. companies are investing in the burgeoning direct-to-device market and aiming to capitalize on Europe's increased focus on space sovereignty.
