Nassau County partners with ICE to enhance enforcement operations
Nassau County is deputizing 10 local police detectives to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in enforcement operations. This program allows detectives to work with ICE on community arrests, expanding beyond just targeting violent criminals. Under the agreement, Nassau County police will notify ICE about undocumented immigrants arrested for various crimes and provide jail space for detentions. Detectives will also have the authority to question individuals about their immigration status during their work with ICE. The New York Civil Liberties Union criticized the plan, stating it could create distrust in the community and discourage immigrants from reporting crimes. Most New York counties do not partner with ICE for similar reasons.
