NASA's MMS mission enhances understanding of magnetic reconnection
NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, launched on March 12, 2015, has significantly advanced our understanding of magnetic reconnection, a process affecting energy transfer in space. This mission has produced over 1,500 scientific papers in ten years. MMS uses four spacecraft in a unique orbit around Earth to study magnetic reconnection in detail. It has challenged previous theories and discovered reconnection in unexpected locations, reshaping scientific knowledge in this area. The mission has also supported young scientists and holds records for the highest GPS fix and the smallest satellite formation. MMS continues to operate efficiently, with enough fuel for future studies of magnetic reconnection.
