Mumbai University approves ₹968.17 crore budget despite protests
The University of Mumbai has approved a budget of ₹968.17 crore for the financial year 2025-26 despite protests from various groups. This budget marks a significant increase of 9.52% from last year's ₹857 crore. The approval took place during a senate meeting at the university's Fort campus. The session was marked by protests from members of Yuva Sena (UBT) and the Bombay University and College Teachers Union (BUCTU). The protest included shouting slogans and a sit-in by senate members. Opponents claimed that the university did not follow proper procedures. They argued that the budget was not discussed at a prior Management Council meeting, which is required before such a presentation. Yuva Sena member Sheetal Devrukhkar-Sheth highlighted the issue, calling for the meeting to be postponed. In defense of the budget process, Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Ajay Bhamare stated that the budget was included in the previous meeting's minutes. Other members of the council supported this view, allowing the budget presentation to proceed despite the ongoing protests. Governor-nominated Senate member Dhanesh Sawant criticized the disruptive behavior, urging members to follow proper protocols for raising objections. Despite the budget's passage, the 18 protesting members continued their sit-in at the convocation hall well into the night. This incident reflects ongoing tensions at the University of Mumbai, with similar protests occurring during past budget sessions. The budget this year indicates a deficit of ₹147.63 crore. Notably, it allocates ₹75 crore for initiatives aimed at improving academic governance, enhancing research, and supporting students.
