Mt Kanlaon eruption causes P32.34 million in agricultural losses on Negros Island
The agriculture sector in Negros Island has reported losses of P32.34 million due to the recent eruption of Mt. Kanlaon. The Department of Agriculture noted damage to rice, corn, high-value crops, and livestock, affecting around 780 farmers. The eruption damaged 832 metric tons of produce across 297 hectares. High-value crops suffered the most, with losses totaling P29.25 million. The Sugar Regulatory Administration indicated that over 6,800 hectares of sugar plantations were also impacted. In response, the Department of Agriculture is providing support, including seeds and veterinary supplies. Affected farmers can access a quick response fund and loans for rehabilitation efforts. The Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation is also compensating insured farmers.
