Most NSW politicians hold university degrees with arts and law as top fields of study

A recent analysis shows that 73% of New South Wales (NSW) politicians hold a university degree, significantly higher than the 28% of the general population. Most politicians studied arts, law, or business, with only nine having STEM backgrounds. The University of Sydney is the most represented institution, with 40 alumni in parliament. Other notable universities include the University of NSW and Macquarie University. A quarter of politicians have completed postgraduate studies, including four with PhDs. The trend indicates a lack of diversity in educational backgrounds among politicians, with many having pursued careers in politics directly after university. Only one politician, Edmond Atalla, is a qualified engineer.
