Moncton teacher sentenced for historic sex crimes
A former teacher from Moncton has been sentenced to 14 years in prison for committing multiple sex crimes against his students. Paul Maillet, 78, was found guilty of 17 offenses involving nine victims. Some of these victims were as young as 12 years old. The sentencing took place in a Moncton courtroom, where Justice Jean-Paul Ouellette stated that Maillet's actions were a serious abuse of his authority. The judge referred to Maillet's behavior as a "flagrant violation" and highlighted the lasting harm caused to the children. The Crown had requested a 14-year sentence, while the defense asked for seven years. Ouellette noted several aggravating factors in the case, including Maillet's position of power and the young ages of the victims. The crimes occurred over several decades, with incidents reported from 1967 to 2022. During the hearing, Maillet claimed he did not understand the impact of his actions on the victims' lives. Ouellette expressed disbelief at this statement, emphasizing the responsibility of an adult in a position of authority. After the decision was read, some attendees, including victims, expressed their relief by applauding in the courtroom. Maillet has been in custody since the trial began and will have 80 days deducted from his sentence for time served. The defense attorney did not comment on whether Maillet plans to appeal the ruling.
