Modi's Nagpur visit scheduled despite recent violence
Nagpur's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the city on March 30 will go ahead as planned. This decision comes despite recent violence in Nagpur. Fadnavis noted that most of the city remains safe and that the unrest was confined to just one area. He assured reporters that all preparations for the visit are complete. During this visit, Modi will lay the foundation stone for the Madhav Netralaya, a new eye hospital and research institute. The event aligns with Gudi Padwa, which celebrates the Marathi New Year. Modi will also share the stage with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat. Fadnavis criticized the Congress party for including a member accused in the Akola riots in a delegation meant to assess the situation in Nagpur. He argued that this reflects a lack of seriousness and undermines efforts to address the violence. The remarks were seen as targeting Congress MLA Sajid Khan Pathan, who denied the accusations and challenged Fadnavis to prove any convictions against him. Congress leader Manikrao Thakre accused Fadnavis of trying to distract from the government’s failings in managing the violence. He pointed out that BJP leaders have not condemned the unrest and stressed that maintaining law and order is essential for any government. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar emphasized that the government will not tolerate attacks against any community. Fadnavis replied that he values the protection of all law-abiding citizens and will not allow incitement of violence or division among communities. He also dismissed speculation that the riots were planned to undermine his leadership, calling such claims unfounded and stating that those responsible for the violence will be held accountable.
