Meghalaya woman fights TB stigma and supports survivors

Ridaline Shullai, a 33-year-old woman from Meghalaya, is fighting against tuberculosis (TB) and the stigma that comes with it. After losing a lung to the disease, she has transformed from a TB survivor into an advocate, helping others battle not just the illness, but also the societal judgment linked to it. Ridaline first showed symptoms of TB in June 2015, including a severe cough and weight loss. Initially, she believed it was just a flu, but her condition soon worsened. After seeking various treatments, she was diagnosed with multidrug-resistant TB and hospitalized in September 2015. Doctors warned her family that she might only have two months to live. Despite the dire prognosis, Ridaline’s mother remained hopeful. The treatment for Ridaline was harsh, involving daily injections and multiple medications for two years. She experienced severe side effects, including nerve pain and nausea, and isolated herself due to the stigma associated with TB. On September 23, 2017, she was declared free of TB, but her health issues persisted, as TB had significantly damaged her lungs. Ridaline's struggles are not just physical. She highlights the emotional and social toll of TB stigma. She recalls a friend who faced extreme isolation after being shunned by peers, ultimately leading to her tragic decision to end her life. Ridaline aims to prevent such tragedies by motivating others to stick with their treatment. Now known as a TB champion, Ridaline offers support and encouragement to those diagnosed with TB. She emphasizes the importance of compassion and awareness, reminding people that TB continues to be a significant health threat. With her advocacy, she is part of a broader group working with the government to help identify and support those affected by TB.
