Matt Martinis wins Breisinger Award for character, leadership
Matt Martinis, a senior linebacker from Thomas Jefferson High School, received the Breisinger Award for leadership and character at the school's football banquet on February 23. This award recognizes a senior player who exemplifies the qualities of courage and dedication, inspired by the late Alby Breisinger. Martinis is praised for his performance on the field, leading the team with 95 tackles during the season. He has been a key part of the Jaguars’ defensive strategy for three years, playing various linebacker positions. His coach, Bill Cherpak, called him a standout player and an exemplary role model for younger teammates. In addition to his athletic achievements, Martinis credits his older brother James as his biggest inspiration. He learned hard work and commitment from his brother, who also played for the Jaguars. Martinis' leadership contributed to the team's success, which included winning the conference title with an undefeated record. Throughout his high school career, Martinis has been recognized for his hard work, both on the field and in the classroom. He plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh to study nursing. The Breisinger Award, established in 1979, honors student-athletes who show exceptional character and commitment to the community. As a starting linebacker, Martinis helped the Jaguars achieve an impressive record over his three years as a starter.
