Marion County crash kills one sister, injures another
A mother in Oregon is mourning the loss of her daughter, Zolayha Johnson, who died in a car crash. The crash also injured her other daughter, Zamora Miller, who is currently in the hospital. The driver, 33-year-old Christopher Atkinson, has been charged and denied bail. The accident happened when Atkinson was reportedly driving over 100 mph with the minors in the car. He had bought alcohol for them earlier that day and was drinking while driving. Police said he couldn't handle a turn and crashed the car, which flipped multiple times. Kristina McDaniel, the girls' mother, had been in constant contact, expecting them home by 9 p.m. When midnight came, she received a call from the hospital. Zolayha was pronounced dead at the scene, and Zamora suffered serious injuries, including broken ribs and a collapsed lung. McDaniel described her daughters as good kids who don’t engage in risky behavior. She expressed anger that Atkinson was with them, saying he "robbed" her family. She remembers Zolayha as a talented cook with dreams of becoming a chef. As Zamora recovers, McDaniel now faces the heartbreaking task of planning her daughter's funeral, expressing the sorrow that parents shouldn’t have to bury their children. Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
