Man shot by San Diego officer pleads guilty
Steffon Nutall, a 30-year-old man from San Diego, pleaded guilty this week to several charges, including child endangerment and assault with a semi-automatic firearm. This plea comes after he was shot by a police officer while holding his infant daughter last May. The incident began when Nutall allegedly threatened his ex-girlfriend and took their baby from her apartment. Police were called to the scene, and a foot chase ensued. Nutall was shot multiple times by Officer Robert Gladysz during the pursuit, but thankfully, his daughter was not injured. Following his guilty plea, Nutall is expected to be sentenced next month. He could face 10 to 16 years in state prison, according to the District Attorney's Office. Despite his guilty pleas, Nutall has filed a lawsuit against the city of San Diego and the officer involved, claiming excessive force was used during the shooting. In the lawsuit, Nutall states that the officer's actions were unnecessary and unlawful. He also claims that he did not pose a threat at the time of the shooting. Nutall says the gunshot wounds have severely affected his mobility, requiring him to use a wheelchair. The police report indicates that Nutall was hiding with the baby when he was found. He reportedly ignored commands to surrender and raised an object, which led the officer to fire. However, it was later confirmed that he was holding his daughter during the incident, and she was returned unharmed. The lawsuit is still pending in federal court in San Diego.
