Man charged with murder after allegedly setting woman on fire in NYC subway
Sebastian Zapeta-Calil, 33, is accused of murdering a woman by setting her on fire in a New York City subway. Prosecutors allege he fanned the flames until she was engulfed. He faces charges of first and second degree murder and arson. Zapeta-Calil, an undocumented immigrant who was previously deported in 2018, reentered the U.S. at an unknown time. His immigration status has sparked renewed criticism of current immigration policies. He was arrested after high school students recognized him from surveillance images. The victim has not yet been identified, but reports suggest she may have been homeless and had mobility issues. Zapeta-Calil's next court appearance is set for December 27, and plans are in place to transfer him to federal custody.
