Madurai's bird count reaches over 21,000 this year

timesofindia.indiatimes.com

The annual bird census in Madurai has brought exciting news. The latest count, completed on March 16, registered over 21,000 birds, a significant increase from last year’s total of 12,670. This year's survey focused on both wetlands and land areas, highlighting the region's rich bird diversity. The census revealed popular wetland habitats, particularly Samanatham Tank, which attracted many winter migrants. Notable birds included flamingos, Eurasian spoonbills, and Siberian stonechats. Conservationists believe that designating Samanatham Tank as an official bird sanctuary could boost conservation efforts and promote eco-tourism. The census was conducted in two phases. The terrestrial bird count took place on March 15 and 16, identifying more than 5,000 birds from 140 species. Key spots for this survey included Nagamalai Pudukottai and Sirumalai South, where the highest species diversity was recorded. The wetland survey, conducted on March 8, covered 25 major water bodies. It found more than 16,000 birds, with Samanatham Tank leading the count. Last year, Samanatham recorded 1,713 birds from 80 species, showing an increase this year. Forest officials have submitted a proposal to the public works department to classify Samanatham Tank as a protected sanctuary. N Ravindran, coordinator of the Iragugal Amrutham Nature Trust, mentioned that the tank is crucial for migratory birds, with 25% of the species being winter visitors. The rich biodiversity in this area highlights Madurai’s importance for bird conservation.
