M23 rebels enter strategic city of Bukavu in eastern Congo
M23 rebels, backed by Rwanda, have entered the center of Bukavu, eastern Congo's second-largest city. Eyewitnesses and a local official confirmed their presence, marking a significant development in the ongoing conflict. The M23 group had been advancing since capturing Goma in late January. Their entry into Bukavu follows their control of surrounding areas, expanding their territory in eastern DRC. If Bukavu falls, it would be the most notable gain for M23 since their resurgence in 2022. The Congolese army has not yet commented on the situation.
