M23 rebels capture key city in eastern DR Congo with little resistance
Rwanda-backed M23 rebels reached Bukavu, the second largest city in eastern Congo, on Sunday, taking control of the South Kivu province administrative office with little resistance from government forces. Many soldiers fled as the rebels advanced. Residents in central Bukavu were seen cheering for the M23, who arrived after a march from Goma, which they captured last month. Parts of the city remained deserted, with many residents staying indoors. Congo's President Félix Tshisekedi held a security meeting in Kinshasa, stating that Bukavu was "briefly" invaded but remains under Congolese army control. There were no signs of fighting in most areas of the city on Sunday.
