M23 rebels capture Kavumu airport as fighting escalates in eastern DR Congo
M23 rebels have captured the airport in Kavumu, near Bukavu, as they advance in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This follows their seizure of Goma last month, leading to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people. The Congolese army and allied militia withdrew with little resistance during the airport battle. Heavy fighting continues on the outskirts of Bukavu, where residents report growing panic and have been advised to stay indoors. International calls for a ceasefire have increased, coinciding with an African Union summit in Ethiopia. Rwanda, accused of supporting the rebels, denies involvement and claims its military presence is for security reasons.
