M23 captures Bukavu as tensions rise in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
M23 fighters, supported by Rwandan troops, have taken control of Bukavu, a major city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This follows their earlier capture of Goma, giving M23 control over Lake Kivu. Many residents have fled amid extensive looting. The Congolese army abandoned Bukavu, leaving behind weapons that civilians and bandits seized. M23 has called for local vigilance committees to maintain security and demanded the withdrawal of Burundian soldiers supporting the Congolese army. Over 10,000 refugees have crossed into Burundi since the takeover. The DRC government has accused Rwanda of occupation plans, while the international community calls for a ceasefire to prevent further escalation of the conflict.
