Lions' cornerback Robertson considered trade candidate
The Detroit Lions are making changes to their cornerbacks group for the 2025 season. Veteran Carlton Davis has left the team in free agency. The Lions have signed D.J. Reed from the New York Jets to fill that spot. Reed will join a secondary that includes 2024 draft picks Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr., as well as Amik Robertson. Reed and Arnold are expected to be the starting outside corners. Robertson and Rakestraw will compete for the slot cornerback position. The player who does not win that job will provide depth along with new signings Rock Ya-Sin and Avonte Maddox. There is speculation about Robertson's future with the team. Pro Football Focus’ Bradley Locker has identified him as a potential trade candidate. Despite the Lions adding Reed, Robertson's strong performance as a slot corner makes him a valuable asset. Last season, he recorded good coverage statistics, including a completion rate allowed of 61.4%. The Lions drafted Rakestraw in the second round, which could mean they want to give him more playing time. However, keeping Robertson could also be wise. The Lions faced many injuries last season and value having depth in their roster. Robertson's versatility and experience make him an important player to have, especially as he enters the final year of his $9 million contract. While trade rumors swirl, it appears that the Lions may choose to keep Robertson. They may see the benefit of having him as a safety net if Rakestraw isn’t ready to step up in 2025.
