Liberia released politicians accused of parliament arson on bail
Four Liberian politicians, including the former speaker, have been released on bail totaling $440,000 after being charged with arson related to a fire at the Capitol building. The accused, including Jonathan Fonati Koffa, face charges of arson, attempted murder, and criminal mischief stemming from a December 2024 fire that caused $8.6 million in damage. The blaze occurred after protests over plans to remove Koffa as speaker. The accused, including three opposition lawmakers, were detained and held before being released on bail, with a travel ban imposed pending the case's conclusion. The fire destroyed the legislature's joint chambers.
