Leapmotor plans smart-driving vehicles launch in Europe

Leapmotor, a Chinese electric vehicle company, plans to introduce its smart-driving vehicles in Europe by 2026. This announcement marks the first time a Chinese automaker has set a timeline to offer advanced driver-assistance technologies outside of China. Leapmotor's senior vice-president, Cao Li, shared this news on Wednesday. To prepare for this rollout, Leapmotor will create a research and development team in Europe. This team will focus on training self-driving algorithms using local road data. Cao pointed out the challenge of adapting to different road conditions and traffic rules in Europe compared to China. Chinese companies like BYD, Zeekr, and Xpeng are racing to launch affordable electric vehicles with features such as autonomous highway driving and parking assistance. Leapmotor plans to update its B10 crossover by the end of this year, allowing it to navigate urban areas using auto-pilot features described as “Level 3” autonomy. This level means drivers can take their hands off the wheel, unlike Level 2 systems that require the driver to stay engaged. Leapmotor began pre-sales of the B10 in China this month, starting at about 109,800 yuan ($15,115). A more advanced version with additional features is priced higher. The upgrades will be delivered over-the-air, but they must first receive regulatory approval in China. Stellantis, a partner of Leapmotor, invested $1.6 billion in the company and established a joint venture called Leapmotor International. They are considering Spain as the production location for the B10 model for the European market. Other European automakers, like Volkswagen and Mercedes, are also developing advanced driving assistance systems, while Tesla aims to launch its Full Self-Driving software in Europe this year. A second model from Leapmotor is expected to be announced at the Shanghai auto show next month.
