Landslide occurs in Port Coquitlam due to heavy rain
Heavy rain has caused a landslide in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. The landslide occurred on Sunday in the Citadel area, near a townhouse complex. City officials are advising people to stay away from the site but report that there are no safety concerns at this time. The Ministry of Transportation is currently on-site to assess the situation. The heavy rainfall in Metro Vancouver was caused by an atmospheric river affecting the region. From Saturday afternoon to Monday morning, most areas in Metro Vancouver received between 54 and 68 millimeters of rain. Some locations saw even more, with Agassiz recording 68 millimeters and Port Mellon receiving 86 millimeters. Rainfall amounts vary across the region, with Cape Beale Lighthouse on West Vancouver Island reporting 134 millimeters. A rainfall warning remains in place for the Fraser Valley, including Hope, as total amounts could reach 80 millimeters. Weather forecasts indicate that the heavy rain will ease to light rain by Monday afternoon and should taper off completely by early Tuesday morning.
