Koroba and Kipetaka braids rise in popularity among Black women in America
Koroba and Kipetaka braids, also known as swirl, basket, and spiral braids, are gaining popularity among Black women in America. These styles, rooted in African culture, were previously less common but are now being embraced by prominent figures like Amandla Stenberg. Koroba braids originate from Nigeria's Yoruba tribe, while Kipetaka braids come from Madagascar. Both styles have distinct histories and are now being creatively reimagined, appealing to those seeking new protective hairstyles. Hairstylist Helena Koudou notes that these low-maintenance styles are secure and can last over a month. They are often adorned with accessories, allowing for personal expression while maintaining their cultural significance.
