Kolkata Airport marks 100 years of growth from grass runway to major travel hub
Kolkata Airport will celebrate its 100th anniversary on December 21st, marking its transformation from a grass runway in the 1920s to a key travel hub. The event will feature exhibitions, cultural programs, and charity initiatives. The airport gained prominence in the mid-20th century, serving as a major stopover for international flights. After a decline, it experienced renewed growth post-liberalization in the 1990s, leading to modernization efforts, including a new terminal in 2013. Currently, Kolkata Airport is expanding to increase its capacity from 26 million to 28 million passengers annually, with plans to eventually accommodate 39 million.
