Kerala launches campaign to combat antibiotic misuse and antimicrobial resistance
Kerala has launched a campaign against antibiotic misuse across all 14 districts to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The initiative aims to raise awareness about the dangers of improper antibiotic use, which contributes to the development of drug-resistant pathogens. Health Minister Veena George announced that antibiotics will now require a doctor's prescription and will be sold in blue packaging. The campaign includes door-to-door outreach by 2,257 trained health workers, focusing on educating communities, including migrant workers, about responsible antibiotic use. AMR poses a significant global health threat, making infections harder to treat. A recent report indicates rising antibiotic resistance in various diseases, highlighting the need for public education on the proper use of antibiotics to prevent further resistance.
