Karla Sofía Gascón becomes first openly trans actress nominated for Oscar

Karla Sofía Gascón has made history as the first openly trans person nominated for an acting Oscar. She received a Best Actress nomination for her role in the Netflix film Emilia Pérez. Gascón's nomination follows her recent recognition at the Golden Globes, SAG, and BAFTA awards. In Emilia Pérez, she plays a cartel leader seeking to live authentically with the help of a lawyer. Previously, Elliott Page was nominated for Juno before coming out as trans. Angela Morley was the first openly trans nominee in 1975, but it took decades for more nominations in acting categories. The Oscars will be held on March 2nd.
