Jeff Skinner thrives with increased opportunity in Edmonton
EDMONTON — With star players Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl sidelined, Jeff Skinner of the Edmonton Oilers is stepping up. He is taking advantage of the extra chances and is becoming a key player for the team. On Saturday, Skinner scored in a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Kraken. This followed his two-goal game against Winnipeg. Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch praised Skinner's recent performances, saying he made good plays every time he had the puck. Skinner’s ice time has increased with the absence of McDavid and Draisaitl. He played nearly 19 minutes against the Kraken, marking a season high. Despite earlier struggles and some games missed due to scratches, Skinner is now demonstrating his scoring ability again. Earlier this season, Skinner faced challenges. He was not maximizing his opportunities when he got them, and injuries left the Oilers with fewer forwards. This situation saw him scratched 10 times. However, his scoring rate remained strong, ranking only behind Draisaitl in points per game since his first scratch. Despite being overlooked by the coaching staff for top line positions, Skinner maintained a positive attitude. Teammates commended his professional attitude and work ethic during tough times. After being a healthy scratch for several games, Skinner recently found a consistent role when he played against his former team, the Buffalo Sabres, earlier this month. His good performances continued, especially after he skated alongside McDavid. Skinner has shown significant improvements in his speed and defensive play recently. His teammates noted he looks revitalized and is effectively contributing when the team needs it. As McDavid and Draisaitl prepare to return, Skinner faces tough competition for top line spots. The Oilers will need to make tough decisions regarding lineups when everyone is healthy. If Skinner keeps performing well, he may secure a solid role moving forward.
