Japan shifts to hydrogen-powered transport for Mount Fuji tourism
Japan has canceled plans for a light railway on Mount Fuji and is now considering a hydrogen-powered transport system developed by China's CRRC. This new system resembles a bus-tram hybrid and aims to reduce construction costs and environmental impact. The proposed "Fuji Tram" would operate on rubber tires instead of rails, helping manage the growing number of visitors. Authorities reported about 178,000 climbers this summer, down from over 200,000 last year, due to crowd control measures. The tram is expected to connect the mountain to a regional station and may be operational by 2034. A feasibility study will be conducted before presenting the plan to local residents.
