Japan develops automated cargo transport system to tackle driver shortage and reduce emissions
Japan is developing an automated cargo transport system between Tokyo and Osaka to address a worsening shortage of truck drivers. The project, known as a "conveyor belt road," aims to start trial runs by 2027 or early 2028. The initiative comes after new laws limiting driver overtime took effect this year, contributing to a projected 34% drop in transport capacity by 2030. The automated system will use wheeled boxes and coordinate with airports, railways, and ports. While human drivers may still handle last-mile deliveries, the plan could expand to other routes if successful. Similar automated transport ideas are being explored in Switzerland and Great Britain.
