Japan develops automated cargo corridor to connect Tokyo and Osaka
Japan is developing an automated cargo transport corridor, called a "conveyor belt road," between Tokyo and Osaka to address a truck driver shortage. The project aims to enhance delivery efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, with trial runs expected to begin in 2027 or 2028. The system will feature automated loading and coordination with airports, railways, and ports. It is designed to alleviate the impact of new laws limiting truck driver overtime, which are projected to reduce transport capacity by 34% by 2030. Currently, trucks handle over 90% of Japan's cargo, but the driver shortage is worsening. The government is exploring innovative solutions to improve logistics and safety in the face of rising delivery demands.
