Italy plans to build world's longest suspension bridge connecting Sicily to mainland by 2030
Italy plans to build the world’s longest suspension bridge, connecting Sicily to the mainland by the early 2030s. Construction is set to begin by the end of 2024, with the bridge measuring 3.6 kilometers (2.2 miles) long. The project, estimated to cost £12 billion (€13.5 billion), will receive 50% funding from the European Union for rail infrastructure. The Italian government aims to manage costs and has a clause to cancel the project if expenses exceed forecasts by 50%. The bridge will feature three vehicle lanes in each direction and railway lines. It is expected to create over 100,000 jobs and improve transport efficiency, while also addressing engineering challenges in the seismically active Strait of Messina.
