An investigation into the Israeli military's failures before the October 7 Hamas attack revealed significant gaps in intelligence and preparedness. The report noted that the Israel Defense Force misinterpreted key indicators of Hamas' intentions and capabilities. The IDF was unprepared for the scale of the attack, which resulted in over 1,200 deaths and more than 250 hostages. The military's response was hindered by a lack of situational awareness and delayed mobilization. IDF chief of staff Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi acknowledged the military's shortcomings and accepted responsibility for the failures. He plans to resign in March following the investigation's findings.
