Israel to keep troops in parts of West Bank for next year following offensive
Israel's defense minister announced that troops will remain in parts of the occupied West Bank for the next year. This follows a weekslong offensive aimed at combating militancy, which began on January 21 after a ceasefire in Gaza. The military's operations have resulted in significant destruction and displacement, with around 40,000 Palestinians fleeing their homes. Israel plans to maintain a presence in refugee camps and has expanded its raids, including deploying tanks to Jenin. Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, violence in the West Bank has increased, with over 800 Palestinians reported killed. The situation remains tense, with ongoing concerns about the ceasefire's stability and potential negotiations.
