IRS relaunches identity protection PIN program for taxpayers
The IRS has relaunched its Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) program to help protect taxpayers from identity theft and fraudulent tax returns. Taxpayers are encouraged to enroll for added security as the 2025 tax season approaches. An IP PIN is a unique six-digit number required for filing tax returns, valid for one year. Taxpayers who previously experienced identity theft are automatically enrolled, while others are urged to sign up to prevent scammers from using their information. To obtain an IP PIN, taxpayers can create an account on the IRS website or submit Form 15227 if they meet income requirements. The IRS recommends enrolling early to avoid potential issues with fraudulent returns.
